Ex-child preacher and cult actor Marjoe
Gortner
gives
his best performance as a psychotic
Vietnam vet who terrorizes a diner full of hapless
people, including Peter Firth as a young rebel
without a cause (or the balls to stand up to
Marjoe's
taunting and abuse). Marjoe delivers
some
of the most hilariously campy one-liners in screen
history, and shows that he was a
much better actor
than he was given credit for, albeit a
scenery-chewing
one.
Also starring Candy Clark as Marjoe's wan
girlfriend
(who shows why
she was named
Candy while bathing in a stream in the opening
scenes).
Hal Linden and Lee Grant have a sex scene
together,
and Pat Hingle plays the gimpy cafe owner.
Despite it's campy qualities, this
is also a very
hard-edged
and at times shocking film
that would probably be more of a cult
classic, if
it were more widely available.
Good soundtrack too - including "People Are Strange" by The Doors.
