ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II

This is a 1976 musical documentary that juxtaposes cover versions of various Beatles classics
(performed by some of the most popular pop musicians of the time) with footage from WWII
and various 20th Century Fox films of the 1940s.  It lasted a week in movie theatres, and was
quickly sent to storage where it has remained for decades, unseen by most people, though many
Beatle fans have the very popular soundtrack album in their collections.  Terry Gilliam was offered
the director's role but turned it down, and Susan Winslow was hired instead.  The original plans
was to use the actual Beatles songs, but the producers decided that extra money could be made
on a soundtrack album, so they came up with the idea of using newly created cover songs.

The artists appearing on the soundtrack include:  Elton John, Tina Turner, the BeeGees,
the Brothers Johnson, the Four Seasons, Frankie Layne, Leo Sayer, Helen Reddy,
Ambrosia, Bryan Ferry, Peter Gabriel, Roy Wood, Keith Moon, Rod Stewart, David
Essex, Jeff Lynne, Lynsey De Paul, Henry Gross, Richard Cocciante, and Status Quo.

CAN HEIRONYMUS MERKIN EVERY FORGET
MERCY HUMPPE AND FIND TRUE HAPPINESS?

This is a 1969 musical film directed by and starring Anthony Newley.  He plays the autobiographical
title role of Merkin, an internationally successful singer approaching middle age who retells his life
story in a series of production numbers on a seashore in front of his two toddler children (played
by Newley's actual kids) and aging mother.  Merkin focuses on his promiscuous relationships with
women, particularly Polyester Poontang (played by Joan Collins, who was Newley's wife at the time)
and the adolescent Mercy Humppe (Playboy centerfold Connie Kreski).  Merkin is constantly
surrounded by a Satan-like procurer, Goodtime Eddie Filth (Milton Berle) and an angelic presence
(George Jessel) who interrupts Merkin's biography with cryptic Borscht Belt level jokes to denote
birth and death in Merkin's life. Newley periodically steps out of character to complain about his
"Merkin" role with an unseen director (voiced by Newley), two screenwriters, the film's producers,
and a trio of blase movie critics who are turned off by the story's eroticism and lack of plot.

The film's presentational style anticipated Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz" (1979). "Merkin" was rather
controversial at the time because of it's original X rating, which meant that many newspapers in the US
wouldnt accept advertising for it.  It was generally considered to be a commercial and critical failure,
though it did receive a very positive review from a young upstart Chicago film critic named Roger Ebert,
who was at the time right in the middle of creating "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" with Russ Meyer, a
film which also flopped but later became a beloved cult classic while "Merkin" fell into relative obscurity.
In 2006, it wont a Chicago Tribune reader's poll as the Worst Film of All Time.  Collings later cited the
film as a contributing factor in her divorce from Newley.  Considering the autobiographical nature of
that aspect of the film's plotline too (including her character's name), it's not too surprising.

This is a good quality print that does have one very short set of commercials halfway thru, but
the film's adult content (which seems quite tame today in the same way as "Midnight Cowboy")
should all be intact, and it should be the complete film shown in cinemas (for the short time that
it lasted there).  There are reports of a longer print that runs almost two hours and contains a
song called "Oh What a Sonofabitch Am I", but Ive never come across it.  Ive tracked down
two subterranean copies of "Merkin" over the years, and this is the best quality of the two.

COCKSUCKER BLUES

"Cocksucker Blues" (or "CS Blues" as it is known in polite company) is an unreleased 1972 documentary
film, directed by Robert Frank, chronicling the Rolling Stones' North American tour in support
of their album "Exile on Main Street".  The film was shot cinema verite style, with several cameras
left lying around for anyone in the entourage to pick up and start shooting. This method allowed the
film's audience to witness backstage parties, drug use (including by members of the band), roadie
antics, and the Stones with their defenses down.  This is the most uncut print of the film available.

NUNZIO

In this touching tale, an amiable mentally challenged delivery boy from Brookly works
to help his mother.
Meanwhile, his older brother keeps him safe from antagonistic local
 punks. While delivering the groceries,
Nunzio often fantasizes about being a superhero,
and also about marrying the young woman who works in
a neighboring bakery.  This
sometimes creates turmoil in his life as he must maintain a strong exterior
to mask his
love for her.  When he saves a child from a burning building, his fantasy becomes reality.

David Proval stars as Nunzio in this extremely rare and sadly forgotten film
 that is still a
beloved memory to many people who remember watching it back
 in the 70s.
Co-starring Joe Spinell, Tovah Feldshuh, and Teresa Saldana.

WHEN YOU COMIN' BACK, RED RYDER?

The setting is Foster's Diner, a rest stop in New Mexico that has lost most of it's clientele

when a new highway bypass opened.  Employees include the restless short order cook Stephen
(played by Peter Firth) who is nicknamed "Red Ryder", the mousy waitress Angel, and their
no-nonsense boss Clark.  Lyle, owner of the adjacent filling station, stops in on occasion to
break up the monotony with his cheery banter.  The boring routine of the daily grind is
disrupted with the arrival of two couples, the upscale Richard and Clarisse (Hal Linden and
Lee Grant) and the younger and wilder Teddy and Cheryl (Marjoe Gortner and Candy Clark).
Complications arise when drugs and guns enter the picture, and Teddy resorts to physical,
mental and emotional torture as he holds everyone hostage.  It's up to Red Ryder to save the day.
